The National Coal Mining Museum provides a unique opportunity to travel 140 metres underground down one of Britain's oldest working mines. Take a step back in time with one of the Museum's experienced local miners who will guide parties around the underground workings, where models and machinery depict methods and conditions of mining from the early 1800s to present day.

The story of coal is brought to life through the Museum's new interactive exhibitions. You can also ride the paddy train, taking in the views from one end of the site to the other, visit the pithead baths, Victorian steam winder, nature trail and adventure playground, and meet the last ever working pit ponies now enjoying their retirement at the Museum, along with Colonel the shire horse. You can also pay a visit to the recently restored Hope pit, the Museum's second colliery complex. A new indoor under 5's play area is also available. And don't forget to enjoy the Museum's well-stocked shop and fully licensed café.

The temperature underground is 12C; we strongly recommend warm clothing and sensible shoes.

Disabled facilities include level parking, ramp and disabled toilets. Underground tours are available with prior arrangement.

The Museum is open 10.00 am - 5.00 pm all year, exc. 24 - 26 December and 1 January.
