Not only is there a collection of the history of the house itself and exhibition from the time it was home to Lowther College, the 15th century castle is a regional partner of the National Portrait Gallery and is home to many 19th Century portraits as well as furniture collections and sculptures. Further information on the National Portrait Gallery collection can be viewed on the Woodward Portrait Explorer in the new gallery so you can discover more by your favourite artists.
Outside in the Castle Parkland, you can visit the First World War practice trenches which still remain. You may also be lucky enough to see one of the ghosts reported to have been seen in the castle from a Victorian lady to a soldier in the galleries. Spend the night on an overnight investigation, the evening on a mini vigil or try one of our ghost walks.
