Local Attractions
The Islands' archipelago is 80km long and 12-25 km wide. The land is a blend of sandy lush pasture (machair) and moorland interspersed with freshwater and sea lochs. Crofting and the Gaelic language and culture is still very much a way of life. North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have some of the finest game fishing in the world.
There are almost 2,000 lochs holding wild brown trout and bright red-speckled hill lochan trout of a few ounces and magnificent machair loch specimens of up to and over 31b in weight. The loch-laced landscape is dominated to the south by Beinn Mhor (Ben More - 620m) in South Uist, which can be seen from the Angler's Retreat.
