Ballater is an excellent touring centre and is popular for all sorts of activities including:-
Golf, there is a local course at Ballater and nearby courses at Aboyne, Braemar, Tarland and Banchory, there are also many other courses in the Surrounding Area
Skiing, Ballater is conveniently situated between the downhill ski areas at nearby Glenshee and The Lecht, whilst the Cairngorm Ski Centre is also with reach (link to Ski Scotland)
Gliding, there is a gliding centre at nearby Aboyne.
Hang Gliding, the Cairnwell at Glenshee Ski Centre is the centre of the Hang Gliding school which attracts top fliers from all over the country.
Swimming, there is a swimming pool in a local Hotel and Timeshare resort which can be used by non residents.
Walking, there are all types of walks available locally ranging from along the old Aberdeen to Ballater railway track to walking over the drover paths to Angus.
Fishing, the River Dee runs through Ballater and there are local stocked lochs, permits can be purchased locally.
Summer Activities at the Ski Centres, there is a variety of summer leisure activities at The Lecht ski centre.
Climbing, you can scale the peaks of Lochnagar and other local mountains

Self Catering Cottage/Home/Apartment Description
Gairnshiel is a beautiful semi-detached cottage ideally situated in a quiet position just off the main square in the pretty Deeside village of Ballater. Built and equipped to a very high standard and deceptively spacious, the cottage has a spacious sitting room/kitchen, which has large patio doors leading out onto a patio and an enclosed walled garden. Gairnshiel sleeps up to 6 persons but would also be ideal for 2 couples as it has two double bedrooms and two adjacent shower rooms.
The scenery here is stunning with the high peaks of mountains and wooded hills leading down to the beautiful River Dee. Braemar is only 16 miles away and you can visit the gardens at Balmoral Castle - 8 miles (open all year except August and September). Aberdeen is 35 miles away and has extensive shopping and entertainment venues. This is a very popular area of Royal Deeside for visitors and there are many facilities, tweed shops and tourist shops. Ballater has many recommended hotels and award winning restaurants serving Scottish Fare. For the energetic this is the centre for outdoor activities which include golf; skiing (the Glenshee slopes are 25 miles away); fishing on the famous River Dee and hill walking.
Ground Floor: Entrance to hallway leading to open plan kitchen, lounge and dining area with patio doors to rear garden. Off the hallway is a bathroom with shower and a double bedroom with built in wardrobe. Stairs inside the front door lead to the First Floor.
First Floor: Two bedrooms off a small landing, one with double bed and en-suite, the other with two single beds. Both bedrooms have built in wardrobes and skylight windows.
Services:
Electric Central Heating, Electric and bed linen (not towels) included in the rent. Electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, washing machine, colour TV, video, CD player, radio and payphone. Outside there is garden furniture and a rotary clothes drier.
Sorry but we do not allow pets in the cottage.
