There are several golf courses in the area, water sports, race courses and museums. Many of the towns in the area are of interest including Bath, Weymouth, Salisbury and Sherborne. For a historical trip visit the abbeys, castles, churches, stone monuments and even the natural attractions such as Cheddar Caves and Gorge the Jurassic coast is within easy reach.
You can discover the area by foot with many walks in the area suitable for different ages and abilities such as the fun family Weymouth Time-Walk Journey or the more adventurous Dramatic Purbeck Coast. We have lots of books on walks as Dorset is famous for walking.

Take the M3 and A303 towards Honiton and Exeter and turn off on the A350 to Shaftesbury. In Shaftesbury take the B3091 to Sturminster Newton. 300 yards/meters after the Manston village sign turn right for Todber 1½, East Stour 3, Gillingham and you will find us the third house on the right (B&B sign outside number 2).
From the North and Wales:
Head to London on the M4 and exit at Junction 18 onto the A46 to Bath and then A36 to Warminster. At the Warminster bypass rounabout take the A350 to Shaftesbury. In Shaftesbury take the B3091 to Sturminster Newton at the roundabout. 300 yards/meters after the Manston village sign turn right for Todber 1½, East Stour 3, Gillingham and you will find us the third house on the right (B&B sign outside number 2).
From the South:
Head for Blandford Forum and in Blandford take the A350 to Shaftesbury. After 1/2 mile turn left over Stour River bridge on the A357 to Sturminster Newton and Sherborne. In Sturminster Newton, turn right over Stour River Bridge into Sturminster Newton passing the narrow centre about 200 yards turning right to the B3091 to Shaftesbury. Throught Manston village pass the Plough Pub on your right and after 150 yards turn left for Todber 1½, East Stour 3, Gillingham. You will find Northwood Cottages 300 yards on your right.
From the South West:
Take the A303 and turn off on the A350 to Shaftesbury. B&B / Guest House Description
Northwood Cottages are situated in the heart of North Dorset nestled in the Blackmore Vale at Manston.
Both cottages, Daisy and Bluebell, provide self catering or bed & breakfast accommodation with Daisy sleeping 6 in 2 double and 2 single rooms and Bluebell sleeping 4 in a double and twin room.
As self catering accommodation, each cottage has been decorated and furnished to a very high standard to provide a comfortable place to stay and a home from home atmosphere. Rooms are equipped with TV, clock radio and hairdryer, laundry facilities available at a small charge, BBQ out on the private patio, central heating throughout with additional heating from electric heaters if required. Linen, towels and complimentary toiletries are included and a cot and high chair are available if you need them (cot bedding not supplied). Guests bringing laptops can make use of the WiFi connection and there is ample parking available near the cottages.
The kitchens are both fully equipped with everything you should need to make your self catering holiday a success: hob, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, cutlery, crockery, glassware and utensils. If you don't fancy cooking, a Full English breakfast can be provided everyday or whenever you'd like during your stay. Evening meals with prior notice.
The lounges are spacious with open plan dining areas, TV, DVD and CD players for a little entertainment. In the colder months you can unwind around the open wood fire in Daisy (LPG log effect fire at Bluebell) on the large comfortable sofas. The bedrooms each include a top of the range Sealy Elegance bed for a good night's rest and there's plenty of storage room available. Rooms are each equipped with TV, dressing table, armchair, en-suite facilities and quality steam iron and ironing boards.
Bed and Breakfast accommodation at Northwood Cottage is available with the six rooms available separately. In Daisy Cottage there's a superior double which can also be used as a family room with space for a cot or spring bed. Each cottage also has a ground floor room and are all equipped with home comforts including complimentary toiletries.
For breakfast you can enjoy self service of cereals, fruit juice, fresh fruit and toast before a delicious Full English, porridge etc. Children also have their own menu with a cooked breakfast. You can arrange to have evening meals at Northwood Cottage with a mouth watering range of starters, main courses including meat, fish and salads, vegetarian alternatives and appetising desserts.
Wine is not available during meals but you can bring your own and the local pub is just a few minutes walk away.
