"The freshest crab sandwich in Weymouth can be found at The George Inn, but this isn't the only reason for visiting.
It's placed at the ideal location at the side of the Old Harbour, and their clever policy of keeping plastic glasses for outside use means you can wander across the road with your pint and sit on the harbour wall watching the boats queuing up for the bridge to raise. You can even take your crab sandwich across but this is served on a crock plate so be careful!

Inside the pub is one large room, partially separated by a lovely beamed wall and a long bar which is used as a food serving area at one end. Also is a separate restaurant which is used mainly in the evening for the main meals, although you can use this area to sit and eat your sandwich/baguette if you ask nicely. Personally I'd rather go and enjoy the sun outside. The restaurant is very pleasing on the eye; with well maintained traditional décor and well spaced tabled and chairs. The tables are available for either two or four and are nicely laid out with cutlery, napkins and menus when you enter.

The bar room is lovely. It's got a nice mix of traditional atmosphere with modern touches; the pretty wall lamps blend in well with cheeky drawings depicting postcard humour over the years. It has a cheerful atmosphere inside and clearly has a regular set of locals who use the boozer – behind the bar is a bulletin board for postcards from abroad which have been received from their regulars when they've been on holiday, a nice touch and gives the impression this is a caring pub rather than a faceless chain.

The George serves an extensive range of drinks; a good selection of bottled and draught lagers and ciders, with the emphasis on real and regional ales. All the usual branded spirits, good quality wine and a small selection of alcopops and soft drinks are available as well as tea and coffee. The drinks prices are very reasonable compared to pubs on the other side of the harbour, with a pint of lager costing £2 and a double Malibu and Coke (my drink of choice) being just £2.25. We were buying rounds for four people during our visit and this would cost just over £8 for all the drinks and whatever crisps anyone fancied.

I ate from the 'light meals' menu; which was brilliant as far as variety goes. Sandwiches and baguettes are freshly made up as you order, or you can choose a jacket potato with a variety of fillings. As I've already mentioned, I had a crab baguette and it was absolutely delicious. The baguette was warmed and wonderfully crispy, this was loaded with a very generous portion of chopped crabmeat and a dollop or two of mayo. The baguette was served with a lovely salad; fresh mushrooms, peppers, cress and all sorts were tossed in a tasty dressing. This baguette cost £4.55, which is slightly expensive although I justified the price by enjoying it so much! Sandwiches start at around £2.50 for a basic cheese and onion and rise in accordance to the more exotic filling you choose!

The George Inn also has an ice cream freezer where you can purchase a Cornetto or Feast to cool you down on a hot summer day by the harbour, or choose one of the pubs Whippy ice creams which come in a deliciously sweet sugar cone with a flake.

Both the pub and restaurant areas are completely suitable for disabled visitors, with wide doors and aisles and no stairs either inside or out. The toilets are also roomy enough for anyone with mobility problems to manoeuvre around, as is the bar area and entrance to the pub itself.

If you encounter any problems, the very helpful and pleasant staff will be happy to help out. It seemed like a husband and wife team behind the bar and they worked well together, with hubby knowing everything there was to know about the ales and the wife being able to recommend menu items off the top of her head.

I'd definitely recommend a visit to The George Inn if you're near Weymouth harbour. It's the only pub in the vicinity that will allow you to take your drinks onto the harbour side which makes for a nice hour sitting on the wall just looking at the water with a nice cold beer – and a crab sandwich, of course!

Assuming you're already in Weymouth, this is a piece of cake to find. Simply Walk along Weymouth beach in the direction of the Pavilion, cross over to the Old Harbour and keep an eye out on your right hand side for the pub sign depicting a regal looking George.

I have spent two holidays in Weymouth and have found the George Inn a fabulous place to enjoy the quay and its people. Being a writer, I always look for places that present local color and interesting characters. And the crab sandwich is excellent as is mentioned here. I even sat out on the wall watching the fishing boats and watched a sailing school of sailors in their small boats.

I've taken the hydro boats from St. Malo to Weymouth, and I've taken the train from London to Weymouth. Lovely times I've had and plan to come again in the Spring 2008.
