"The Pilgrim's Walk at Maesycrugiau is just one of many pleasant walks in West Wales' unspoilt Teifi river valley.
The walk is beautiful at all times of year, with the changing riverscape and abundant wildlife adding interest. Starting at the Pontllwni bridge in Maesycrugiau, the walk takes you alongside the river on a path cut into the side of a steep hill. The river rushes over rocks and falls below you and a wooded hill with mixed deciduous trees is above you on the other side of the path. The mixture of woods and water is great for birdlife. If you are lucky you might see a kingfisher like a luminous turquoise dart as it dives for fish in the river. Come in spring and you may see mother duck and her troupe of ducklings out for a swim. Throughout the year there are many charming small birds such as chaffinches, wrens, bluetits and the like that live around the trees and river bank.
The next part of the walk bends away from the river and will give you a clue as to where the name Pilgrim's Walk derives. For a longer walk, you can at this point go through a kissing gate and carry on along the river bank, through fields and come out on another lane, which in turn will bring you back to your starting place after a stroll through winding lanes for about half an hour. The main path winds up around the hill taking you to the ancient Llanllwni Church with its broad square tower and atmospheric churchyard. Through the churchyard is another path leading back down to the lane, where there is an ample parking space.
The walk has many lovely places for picnics, sketching or just relaxing. There is also a nice pub (The Old Railway Inn) a few minutes walk up the hill.
The shortest route round can be done in about half an hour but can be varied for a longer walk. It can be a little muddy at times, but otherwise is an easy walk on pathways, with no stiles or other difficulties. This is one of the secluded parts of 'undiscovered' Wales, the Teifi Valley being little known and wonderfully uncrowded and uncommercial.
Maesycrugiau can be found via lanes off the A485 between Carmarthen and Lampeter."
