"Founded in 1753, this is one of the worlds great museums, showing the works of man from all over the world from prehistoric to comparitivly modern times. The imposing building which houses the meuseum was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and completed in the mid 19th century. The galleries are the responsibility of the following departments: Egyptian, greek and Roman, Western Asiatic, Prehistoric and Romano British, Medieval and Later, Coins and Medals, Oriental, Prints and drawings. Since there is so much to see in the museum, visitors are advised to equip themselves with a guide book and make a selection of exibits which they can look at in the time available. Most visitors wish to see the superb Elgin marbles, from temples and other buildings in Athens. British treasures include the beautiful 7th century Sutton Hoo Treasure and the 12th century Lewis Chessmen. Each year, special exhibitions focus more detailed attention on certain aspects of the collections. Programmes are available on request. This was a great cultural day out for me, i suggest visiting if in London, or if you live anywhere, it really is that good."
