"If you haven't been – Why not? You have no idea what you're missing. We have something round here for everyone. Quiet weekend, Cultural visits, museums, experiences. I shall try over next few weeks to list some of the places I've been and to add the ones I've yet to discover!
If anyone is passing or thinking of a trip to Wales, PM me on yoursecretforum.co.uk (andy4466uk) letting me know what you're into and I'll find out what's here for you.
Ok I'll start with one of my favourites
Merthyr Mawr – One of south Wales's best kept secrets. Nestled between holiday “resorts”, Porthcawl and Barry Island, is an area of golden sandy beach about 3 miles long. In the summer its not on the way to anywhere so even on the hottest days you can find a spot to play. Drive down through single track country lanes through idyllic thatched villages into a wooded car park under a castle ruins. If the guy's not busy it'll cost you £1 for all day parking, if he's busy he won't be there so its free!. Walk 5yds through the trees to the edge of the carpark and its like another world - 60-70 foot sand dunes (take some trays their great for sliding down the dunes!). Wander down any of the criss crossing paths through the desert like features for 1-2 miles (plenty of spots for private moments, tan topping up, BBQ's, or just sitting and reading). Suddenly you'll top the last dune and its open beach, golden sand ,for miles in either direction and the sea stretching off into the distance. The beach has ample supplies of shells to collect, drift wood to play on or look at, something to keep everyone amused for ages. We do this all year round, in the winter the dogs love it the kids love it and it's the only time no one is nagging me.
Slight detours 1 or 2 miles are Ogmore castle with stepping stones across a waist high river about 30-40 feet across, too cold for me to mess on but the dogs and kids don't feel the cold so towels advised if you have either!
In the surrounding areas there are plenty of static caravan parks or camp sites, and in the towns B&B's with varying price ranges depending on what you want!
Also as I will add there are so many other places to go so if this doesn't appeal to you, watch this space for next place. On the other hand if you like the sound of this and want to know more , just ask,"
