"Hadrians wall in August is a riot of activity. During the summer most of the old roman sites have activities/roman festivals/re-enactments that are of interest to adults and the kids love them! If raining visit the Roman Army museum, don't miss Vindolanda with lots of artifacts just being excavated and actual letters from the legionnaires to their families back home. The walk from Twice Brewed to Housesteads is a favourite with my six year old (particularly as it includes the 'Robin Hood' tree), and the Housesteads remains include a Roman Toilet -always a favourite with young and old alike. The bus service along the wall is excellent, regular and cheap; the perfect excuse to leave the car in one of the National Park carparks and walk from A to B...and catch a bus back if the children are tired. The whole area is littered with tantalising glimpses of Roman History from parts of the wall, old standing stones and remains of mile-forts. Another not to miss is the Temple of Mithras, my favourite, and still in use with offerings from our time to the old gods."
