"The Cathedral Church in Peterborough is perhaps one of the most beautiful Cathedral buildings (apart from Winchester Cathedral) I have come across in many years. Located in the city centre of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, the Cathedral stands grandly in Cathedral Square.
The architecture is simply amazing with huge arches on the West Front of the Cathedral and the original wooden ceiling survives in the nave (it is the only remaining wooden ceiling of this type in the country). Apart from the architecture, other tourist interest is gathered around the burial places of Katharine of Aragon and of Mary Queen of Scots.
I learnt on my visit that this poor building has suffered in the past with destruction during the civil war, Cromwell's boys destroyed the Cloisters, the Lady Chapel and the Chapter House and then came a devastating fire in November 2001 which bought about a massive restoration programme (an ongoing and endless task). Despite the unfortunate events, it still remains to be an awesome place to visit and worship.
Staff at very knowledgeable and will gladly answer any questions that you may have. You can take up a guided tour and this will cost approx £3.50. Personally I would recommend the tour which takes you up on the tower and roof (for those with a head for heights only)
There is a good range of amenities including the Beckets Restaurant which supplies a nice range of sandwiches and freshly cooked meals. I couldn't resist the homemade cake that was on offer, and would certainly recommend it. For those that prefer to picnic, this is permitted in the Cloister and in the Cathedral grounds, perfect on a warm day. For kids, there is always the cathedral shop where they can pick up the usual souvenirs like rubbers etc and for the adults there is photographs and information books.
There is no charge for entry to the Cathedral but you are likely to be approached by staff who welcome you to make a donation to the upkeep of the building. Suggested donations are £3.50 for an adult and £2.50 for a child."
