"If you're looking for good Indian food, luxurious décor and a fantastic atmosphere then the Ashoka in Burnley is the place to go. It's the sister restaurant of the already renowned Ashoka restaurant in Rossendale and is fast gaining a fantastic reputation of its own.
Getting there is easy enough as it's situated on Manchester road, not too far out of Burnley centre. There is ample parking available if you choose to drive but if you fancy a Cobra lager with your curry a taxi would cost £5-7 each way or buses including the X43 stop virtually on the doorstep. If you find yourself asking for directions, the 'locals' will probably know it best as The Bull and Butcher – the pub which has undergone numerous transformations in the past and is now home to the Ashoka.
The interior is fabulous with plenty of designer light fittings and strangely shaped chairs you can't resist trying out. As you enter, there is a bar (manned by an extremely friendly Cuban) and a quite large seating area. To the left is the 'pub' section of the restaurant which, on my most recent visit, had been redecorated to match the relaxed opulence of the restaurant. The large dining area is on the right as you enter and there is a large decked area outside at the back with patio heaters and a Mediterranean feel to it, overlooking the Lancashire hills.
The restaurant has an upbeat vibe and is usually filled with people and chatter. The popularity of this place is shown by the sheer number of diners every night of the week so you'd be best advised to book in advance. And despite the upmarket feel of the restaurant, you'll be pleased to know that the prices are quite modest.
The food is fantastic. I've visited twice with large groups of 20 plus people and no one has been disappointed yet. It's also given me the chance to taste other people's foods and I can give the chef at the Ashoka a resounding stamp of approval. The king prawn puree is divine and I particularly enjoy the chicken saag. The portions are more than generous, particularly for the main courses. I have yet to finish my curry following puppodums and a starter but the prices are very reasonable so you don't feel too guilty when you find yourself stuffed!
As for the service, it's fantastic. The waiters are friendly and conscientious without pestering. You're also given time to eat and a chance to relax between courses. There isn't anyone standing over your shoulder hurrying you along which means you can enjoy your evening and stretch it out as long as you like.
After eating, the attached pub area is a lovely relaxed place to enjoy some more drinks and conversation. I've found that everyone I've been with also takes this opportunity to rave about the fantastic food.
The Ashoka is a highly recommended top night out. I will definitely return time and time again as the food and service speaks for itself."
