"The Kings Arms is a gorgeously transformed Edwardian hotel located in the center of the village Strete, Devon. Just a few miles from Dartmouth, it's well worth a visit if you're in the South Hams vicinity. The pub has a large car park just a few yards down the road and, although tucked away, it's well worth meandering down the country lanes to get to this gem of a restaurant. Make sure you book in advance though as you'll be lucky to get a table otherwise!
If you walk in expecting a pleasant pub meal, the stunning costal view over start bay and the extensive menu should soon remind you that this is in fact a top notch restaurant serving high quality food. It features in numerous Good Pub guides and has even been awarded a star by Egon Ronay, renowned restaurant critic.
My partner and I have visited the King's Arms twice, most recently enjoying a meal there last week and I'm pleased to say it lived up to our memories and expectations. The menu is seasonal and therefore varies in order to guarantee the freshest local produce. For our most recent meal, I devoured the largest starter sized portion of mussels that I think I have ever witnessed and I savoured every last one.
For the main course, my partner enjoyed a ribeye steak and he's still raving about it – quite a compliment coming from the son of a master butcher! I had lamb for my main course but, as far as I can recall, we eventually opted for the only two non-fish dishes on the menu! The Kings Arms prides itself on offering some of the best seafood that Devon has to offer.
The wine list is also extensive but reasonably priced and the family who run the Kings Arms are always on hand to offer your friendly advice on your selection. Whilst the food is superb, there's certainly no stuffiness about the place. The ambience is friendly and relaxed and it's just as pleasant in the bar area where we relaxed with Irish coffees whilst our meal settled.
As for price, we found the cost of the meal to be quite reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food and the stunning sea view from the restaurant. Starters are priced at £5-£8 with main courses varying between £12 and £16. Desserts are all around the £5.50 mark though I have to admit, I've never managed three courses at the King's Arms as the portions are more than generous.
The Kings Arms really is the perfect setting for tasty food and comes highly recommended. You can find more information on the restaurant on their website at **Please contact YSUK for full page listing** which includes sample menus and comments from other satisfied diners so you don't just have to take my word for it!"
