"In my opinion, Saunton beach is one of the loveliest places in the United Kingdom. The carpark is quite expensive - ranging between £2 - £3 on the week we were there, depending on the day. But once youre parked up and lug your picnic stuff to the beach, you'll think it was certainly worth it.
The beach is a vast space with very gently sloping sand. This makes it ideal for children. To the right of the beach youve got a large rocky area, great for rock pools with small crabs and fish, very interesting for the children.
We picnicked on the beach, but one lunchtime we went to the surf shop cafe. This is upstairs and is surprisingly plush. In fact we should pop back for an evening meal. The menu looks very nice, though slightly exensive. We had a small beer (no draught) and a cream tea. The cream tea was the best we had in Devon and that's saying something!
If this was an indication of the food available, we'll definitely be going back.
Back to the beach. The beach lined with both sand dunes and cliffs, so you've got all sorts of points of interest. If it's slightly windy, the cliffs make a lovely windbreak, and you can easily create a large sun trap to catch the rays.
The beach is always crawling with surf-heads. Hundreds of them. Surfing isn't my scene but if it's yours then I expect this is a top place to do it.
Saunton sands is spectacular and convenient if you're driving."
