The birthplace of the train!Darlington, Durham, England North EastRecommendation added: 30/01/2006 12:16 By: creepyspid (YSUK rating +2) creepyspid has been thanked 2 times for this contribution
"This area doesn't really seem to get mentioned much, and when it does people seem to home in on the cold weather and the rain! However there really is a lot to do in the north east of England, and especially Darlington.
If you have ever heard of Darlington then you are probably familier with it due to the Stockton - Darlington railway which was the first railway to be founded in the United Kingdom. In Darlington itself there is a museum dedicated to this, and slightly further away, (accessable by train!), there is the railway musuem at Shildon. If these museum whet your appetite for further 'steamy' adventures then the National Railway at York is only a short journey away. So okay then, you don't like trains,so why else come to Darlington? The markets in the town are well renowned, including a weekly farmers market and a quarterly French market. The indoor market has been established since the early twentieth century and the clock tower there is fantastic! The town also has all the local amenties, such as a leisure centre with swimming pool, a cinema, a theatre and bars and restaurants for many tastes. A lot of money is currently being invested in the town including the pedestrianisation of the town centre, a multi-million pound college and a schooling Academy are planned. So, what have you got to lose? Visit Darlington today and you wont be disappointed - just wear your thermals and bring an umbrella!" Was this recommendation useful?
