Seals 30 minutes from Bainvalley CottageHorncastle, Lincolnshire, England East MidlandsRecommendation added: 29/01/2007 20:11 By: Bainvalley (YSUK rating +11) Bainvalley has been thanked 11 times for this contribution
"The weather has been so gloriously mild it has enticed me, three times to go and see a most amazing spectacle that hits Lincolnshire from November to January each year. Grey Seal Cows come to the edge of a sand dune, only half an hour from the Cottage, to have their pups. The male Bulls wait close by, for the pups to grow and leave their mothers so that they can then impregnate the cows to start the regeneration process once again. It seems extraordinary that the Seals come as close to the dunes as they do. During the week there is a bombing range next door and you would think the noise and low flying aircraft would put the Seals off but the dunes offer a safe sanctuary for their calving. The Seal pups stay with their Mums for 2-3 weeks until they have tripled their birth weight. The Mums loose up to 10 lbs a day as they feed their pups. It is such an uplifting natural spectacle – well worth a visit!"
