"Some like to watch their movies in small cinema cafés with their old flair and black and white screens, others prefer the comfortable seats of a huge complex. The IMAX offers a completely new experience that will leave you wanting for more in no time.
The building is very modern and look technologically advanced as its walls are made of mirror glass and what looks like chrome steel. The IMAX system was opened in May 1999 and was developed by a wide range of cameras and multiple projectors to create the real-life sensation by the British Film Institute (BFI). It can accommodate up to 500 film-lovers in its huge auditorium.
With screens as high as twenty metres and a width of twenty-six metres, crystal clear images and digital sound, no cinema experience will seem more real-life. Branded as the most advanced motion-picture projection system in the world, in the early years, the IMAX was regarded as a completely educational experience with documentaries of the animal world and the human body as the major screenings. In recent years, however, the screenings of Hollywood blockbusters such as Superman Returns and the Harry Potter series have been on the increase. In addition to the extraordinary sound and visual quality, you will be literally shifting in your seat. As you will experience breathtaking footage from the highest mountains in the world and the deepest seas, your seat will move with the picture and will awake the impression that you're really sitting high up in that helicopter, flying over the Grand Canyon, or caged deep under the water surface with a shark preying upon your every move. This larger-than-life experience will leave children and adults alike mesmerized as you'll think you're not just watching a movie, you're right there in the picture, and experiencing it first-hand. More than once, you will find yourself trying to touch the void in front of you as you'll have forgotten where you are.
It is clear that the seats were designed with comfort in mind. With fourteen rows of tiered seats, everyone from child to adult will enjoy an unobstructed view. The atmosphere is very relaxing as no sound from the traffic outside will cloud this unique experience. There's easy access for disabled visitors and induction loop facilities for the hard-of-hearing.
The IMAX staff is very friendly and well-groomed at all times. The cinema is always clean and the toilet facilities are cared for on an hourly basis.
IMAX used to be educational entertainment for children but has become something like a social activity for entire families, the young and old.
The IMAX cinema offers a wide range of educational activities for schools at discounted prices, but also for groups of four and more, in addition to student and seniors discount.
Getting there is easy even if you don't live nearby. If you're traveling by public transport, the nearest station is Waterloo, Exit 5. By car, just park on South Bank from where it's only a minute's walk.
Entry fees vary according to age and time of week. Mondays to Fridays, an adult pays £7.90; the fee for a child is £4.95, under 3 year-olds go free. There's a special discount for concessions and students, who have a valid NUS card."
